Helping Your Child Stop Smoking

Sent by Ashish Jain, www.stop-smoking-updates.com

You need to find solutions to teen-age problems, very fast. This generation is in a hurry. They have no time to pause and ponder. Being young, impressionable minds, they are easily carried away. They want quick rewards, efforts or no efforts. For every question, the youngsters have a counter-question. As a matter of course, this generation picks up bad habits. Smoking is one such serious habit, which needs to be checked well in time.

To help your child stop smoking is your parental responsibility. Do not show any latitude on this count.

Teenage smoking has been increasing at a phenomenal rate for the last few decades. The reasons may be many, but if the elder members in a family smoke, you can hardly do anything morally about smoking.

This negative tendency is also given additional fillip by advertisements in TV, newspapers, and calculated encouragement by the tobacco manufacturers. This habit has assumed alarming proportions in the college-going youngsters.

The father and mother alone can not help the teenage child. His social environment also compulsively influences him. So, they need to be provided with helpful resources for identifying remedy for their compulsive smoking addiction.

Educating the teenagers on compulsive smoking addiction, should be a part of the school syllabus. There are many stop smoking centers, run by private individuals or voluntary organizations. Provide your son with their telephone number, and if necessary take them along you, a couple of times.

There is another danger about smoking. Smoking is just the first step of the ladder of a series of destructive habits. The child, after taking course to smoking, may indulge in self-destructive behavior and neglect studies.

Notice these early warnings and your child’s changed behavior, to take corrective measures immediately.

The future of the family depends upon the children. It is your duty to give them good education and a solid foundation as for their moral and ethical values.

Children generally take to habits like smoking because of a lack of communication between the members of the family and the children. You will be the party to their moral doom, and ethical disaster unless you do something tangible, well in time.

Stop smoking basics

By Mansi gupta, stopthesmoke.com

Since ages, smoke and human life share an inverse liaison i.e. a surge in the former brings a reduction in the quality as well as quantity of the latter. The smoke that is rich in the hazardous substance called nicotine enters human body via cigarette smoking. The active smokers as well as the passive ones both suffer greatly due to smoking. Studies and surveys reveal the escalating number of human lives that smoke swallows each day. Keeping this alarming death rate because of cigarette smoking in mind, doctors have developed new therapies, the government and some non-profit organizations have initiated certain quit smoking programs to make people aware of injurious effects of smoking. This article will enumerate the various new and beneficial measures taken in this direction.

1. In order to save an individual’s life from smoking, the foremost strategy is to treat the rinse out the excess of nicotine in his body. The ‘Nicotine Therapies’ or ‘Nicotine Replacement Therapies’ (NRT’s) work for this very purpose. During the course of this therapy, the individual is restrained from smoking by feeding him with calculated doses of nicotine to avoid detrimental consequences. This keeps the person in a balanced state and minimizes the craving for cigarette as the dosage of nicotine is reduced gradually.

Nicotine substitution is also done via nicotine-laced chewing gums. This method to quit cigarette smoking can be traced back to 1971 when Pharmacia developed it and FDA approved of it in 1984. These gums were successful to a particular extent but lost worth when people started getting addicted to them. Apart from nicotine-laced gums, inhalers, nasal sprays and transdermal skin patch are other devices that function for the same cause. Amongst these the transdermal skin patch form of NRT is greatly acclaimed. Users put the nicotine patch to have time-released assistance.

2. Prescription drugs such as Bupropion or Zyban and Buspirone or BuSpar have proved to be of tremendous help to chain smokers in limiting smoking addiction. Basically these drugs are antidepressants and are prescribed to patients of depression. But they have also proved to be greatly effective in controlling the smoking habit.

3. Hypnosis is a psychotic therapy to lessen smoking obsession. Hypnosis purges the individual of pro-smoking thoughts and fills him with revulsion to smoking. This is possible because hypnosis takes the person in a semi-conscious state where he can be programmed to do things which the hypnotist wants him to do. Regular hypnotic treatment has diminished cigarette craving to a large extent.

4. Negative Stimuli method for quitting smoking involves giving small electric shocks that injects in the person a reluctance to smoke.

5. Rapid Smoking or Satiation Smoking, as the name suggests is to induce in the addict an aversion to smoke by giving him a hefty dosage of cigarettes. He is made to smoke twice the number of cigarettes he smokes regularly. In most of the cases at the end, the person starts feeling sick of nicotine and dislikes cigarette.

6. However, none of these tough therapies can be fruitful unless an addict himself decides to refrain from smoking. ‘God helps those who help themselves’. Self desire and strong will are essential pre requisites to any kind of quit smoking treatment. Self-help is the best help, so, an individual should be absolutely prepared to save his life from devastation due to smoking

Lose Weight While Working at Your Desk

If it works, this could be the best weight loss invention yet - the ability to easily burn almost 120 extra calories per hour while working at your computer.

The origin of this thinking comes from Dr. James Levine, an endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic, who found that any incremental movement, even fidgeting, burns extra calories. From this, he extrapolated that even very light aerobic activity would cause the body to greatly increase the rate at which it burns calories, a process called non-exercise activity thermogenesis.

To study his hypothesis, he invented a computer workstation that can be used while walking slowly - very slowly - on a treadmill, and recently released the results of a small research study that evaluated how many calories this would burn.

The recent study included 15 obese individuals - 14 women and one man - in their forties who did no regular exercise. Their average Body Mass Index (BMI) was 32 and percent body fat was 52%. Using the treadmill at 1mph burned 119 more calories per hour during the study than sitting while working, which would indicate that walk-working for 2 to 3 hours per day could lead to a weight loss of about 45 pounds in a year according to Dr Levine. Understanding Mental Health

By Lisa Angelettie M.S.W., www.girlshrink.com

The term “mental health” is one that sends some people running for cover. People want to always present the illusion of total control at all times; But statistics over the years have shown us a different reality. One out of ten people will suffer from some sort of mental health problem over the course of their lives.

Imagine your graduating class? Or the teacher staff at your children’s school. Or the White House Staff. 1 out of 10 of them could be dealing with something right now. Does that scare you? It shouldn’t.

People suffering from a mental health disorder have long been given a stigma. They are called crazy. Or nuts. Now, think about your local news. When someone commits an inexplicable act of violence, haven’t you said or thought, “Oh, he must be crazy. Or insane. Only a crazy person would do something like that!”

The truth is that we are generalizing the whole spectrum of mental health disorders and doing ourselves a disservice when we think like this. People with mental health issues are normal people.

A woman who lives across the street from you, and works at a local bank, may suffer from bipolar disorder (which is much like manic depression) — but with appropriate treatment she lives normally.

Reality Check…
1. People do not actively seek treatment for many mental health issues because of the stigma attached to having a problem, getting counseling, or taking medication. Encourage people you know to seek treatment. Or seek treatment for yourself. Don’t let public perception hinder your own growth.

2. People do not know enough about mental health disorders. Read your paper. Go on the internet. Ask your doctor questions. Get mental health savvy. It is almost guaranteed that you will need that information for yourself or for a loved one day.

3. Mental health problems can be event triggered. If your mother dies, you are expected to be very sad, but if you find that you are unable to crawl out from under the deep sadness after a prolonged period of time - it is possible that you are suffering from clinical depression that was triggered by a traumatic event.

4. Seeking treatment is not a sign of weakness. It is almost ridiculous to not seek the help you need, because you believe it is a sign of weakness on your part. A diabetic takes their insulin, much like A bipolar patient may need their lithium. A physical problem may require a medical and/or psychotheraputic solution. Talking to your best friend about it from time to time is not a medical solution.

5. Recent studies have shown that internet therapy can be very successful for a particular type of patient–mostly depressed ones. If you rather not face the confrontation of a face to face meeting with a clinician, then this may be the way to go.
